Read The Full Democracy Day Speech By Acting President Yemi Osinbajo

Dear Nigerians, I bring you good wishes from President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who as we all know is away from the country on medical vacation.
1. Today marks the second anniversary of our assumption of office. We must thank the Almighty God not only for preserving our lives to celebrate this second anniversary, but for giving us hope, strength and confidence as we faced the challenges of the past two years.

2. Our administration outlined three specific areas for our immediate intervention on assumption of office: these were Security, Corruption and the Economy.

3. In the Northeast of our country, the terrorist group Boko Haram openly challenged the sovereignty and continued existence of the state, killing, maiming, and abducting, causing the displacement of the largest number of our citizens in recent history. Beyond the North East they extended their mindless killings, as far away as Abuja, Kano And Kaduna.

4. But with new leadership and renewed confidence our gallant military immediately began to put Boko Haram on the back foot. We have restored broken-down relations with our neighbours, Chad, Cameroon and Niger – allies without whom the war against terror would have been extremely difficult to win. We have re-organized and equipped our Armed Forces, and inspired them to heroic feats; we have also revitalized the regional Multinational Joint Task Force, by providing the required funding and leadership.

5. The positive results are clear for all to see. In the last two years close to one million displaced persons have returned home. 106 of our daughters from Chibok have regained their freedom, after more than two years in captivity, in addition to the thousands of other captives who have since tasted freedom.

6. Schools, hospitals and businesses are springing back to life across the Northeast, especially in Borno State, the epicentre of the crisis. Farmers are returning to the farms from which they fled in the wake of Boko Haram. Finally, our people are getting a chance to begin the urgent task of rebuilding their lives.

7. Across the country, in the Niger Delta, and in parts of the North Central region, we are engaging with local communities, to understand their grievances, and to create solutions that respond to these grievances adequately and enduringly.

8. President Buhari’s New Vision for the Niger Delta is a comprehensive peace, security and development plan that will ensure that the people benefit fully from the wealth of the region, and we have seen to it that it is the product of deep and extensive consultations, and that it has now moved from idea to execution. Included in that New Vision is the long-overdue environmental clean-up of the Niger Delta beginning with Ogoni-land, which we launched last year.

9. More recent threats to security such as the herdsmen clashes with farmers in many parts of the country sometimes leading to fatalities and loss of livelihoods and property have also preoccupied our security structures. We are working with State governments, and tasking our security agencies with designing effective strategies and interventions that will bring this menace to an end. We are determined to ensure that anyone who uses violence, or carries arms without legal authority is apprehended and sanctioned.

10. In the fight against corruption, we have focused on bringing persons accused of corruption to justice. We believe that the looting of public resources that took place in the past few years has to be accounted for. Funds appropriated to build roads, railway lines, and power plants, and to equip the military, that had been stolen or diverted into private pockets, must be retrieved and the culprits brought to justice. Many have said that the process is slow, and that is true, corruption has fought back with tremendous resources and our system of administration of justice has been quite slow. But the good news for justice is that our law does not recognize a time bar for the prosecution of corruption and other crimes, and we will not relent in our efforts to apprehend and bring corruption suspects to justice. We are also re-equipping our prosecution teams, and part of the expected judicial reforms is to dedicate some specific courts to the trial of corruption cases.

11. We are also institutionalizing safeguards and deterrents. We have expanded the coverage of the Treasury Single Account (TSA). We have introduced more efficient accounting and budgeting systems across the Federal Government. We have also launched an extremely successful Whistleblower Policy.

12. The Efficiency Unit of the Federal Ministry of Finance has succeeded in plugging leakages amounting to billions of naira, over the last two years. We have ended expensive and much-abused fertilizer and petrol subsidy regimes.

13. We have taken very seriously our promise to save and invest for the future, even against the backdrop of our revenue challenges, and we have in the last two years added US$500m to our Sovereign Wealth Fund and US$87m to the Excess Crude Account. This is the very opposite of the situation before now, when rising oil prices failed to translate to rising levels of savings and investment.

14. Admittedly, the economy has proven to be the biggest challenge of all. Let me first express just how concerned we have been, since this administration took office, about the impact of the economic difficulties on our citizens.

15. Through no fault of theirs, some companies shut down their operations, others downsized; people lost jobs, had to endure rising food prices. In some States civil servants worked months on end without the guarantee of a salary, even as rents and school fees and other expenses continued to show up like clockwork.

16. We have been extremely mindful of the many sacrifices that you have had to make over the last few years. And for this reason this administration’s work on the economic front has been targeted at a combination of short-term interventions to cushion the pain, as well as medium to long term efforts aimed at rebuilding an economy that is no longer helplessly dependent on the price of crude oil.

17. Those short-term interventions include putting together a series of bailout packages for our State Governments, to enable them bridge their salary shortfalls – an issue the President has consistently expressed his concerns about. We also began the hard work of laying out a framework for our Social Intervention Programme, the most ambitious in the history of the country.

1. One of the first tasks of the Cabinet and the Economic Management Team was to put together a Strategic Implementation Plan for the 2016 budget, targeting initiatives that would create speedy yet lasting impact on the lives of Nigerians.

1. Indeed, much of 2016 was spent clearing the mess we inherited and putting the building blocks together for the future of our dreams; laying a solid foundation for the kind of future that you deserve as citizens of Nigeria.

1. In his Budget Presentation Speech to the National Assembly last December, President Buhari outlined our Economic Agenda in detail, and assured that 2017 -would be the year in which you would begin to see tangible benefits of all the planning and preparation work. It is my pleasure to note that in the five months since he delivered that speech, we have seen tremendous progress, as promised.

1. Take the example of our Social Investment Programme, which kicked off at the end of 2016. Its Home Grown School Feeding component is now feeding more than 1 million primary school children across seven states and would be feeding three million by the end of the year. N-Power, another component has engaged 200,000 unemployed graduates – none of whom needed any ‘connections’ to be selected. Beneficiaries are already telling the stories of how these initiatives have given them a fresh start in their lives.

2. Micro credit to a million artisans, traders and market men and women has begun. While conditional cash transfers to eventually reach a million of the poorest and most vulnerable households has also begun.

3. Road and power projects are ongoing in every part of the country. In rail, we are making progress with our plans to attract hundreds of millions of dollars in investment to upgrade the existing 3,500km narrow-gauge network. We have also in 2017 flagged-off construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan leg of our standard-gauge network, and are close to completing the first phase of Abuja’s Mass Transit Rail System.

4. In that Budget speech in December, the President announced the take-off of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative. Today, five months on, that Initiative – the product of an unprecedented bilateral cooperation with the Government of Morocco – has resulted in the revitalisation of 11 blending plants across the country, the creation of 50,000 direct and indirect jobs so far, and in the production of 300,000 metric tonnes of NPK fertilizer, which is being sold to farmers at prices significantly lower than what they paid last year. By the end of 2017, that Fertilizer Initiative would have led to foreign exchange savings of US$200 million; and subsidy savings of 60 billion naira.

5. The Initiative is building on the solid gains of the Anchor Borrowers Programme, launched in 2015 to support our rice and wheat farmers, as part of our move towards guaranteeing food security for Nigeria.

6. All of this is evidence that we are taking very seriously our ambition of agricultural self-sufficiency. I am delighted to note that since 2015 our imports of rice have dropped by 90 percent, while domestic production has almost tripled. Our goal is to produce enough rice to meet local demand by 2019. In April, the President launched our Economic Recovery and Growth Plan which built on the foundations laid by the Strategic implementation Plan of 2016. The plan has set forth a clear vision for the economic development of Nigeria. I will come back to this point presently.

7. Another highlight of the President’s Budget Speech was our work around the Ease of Doing Business reforms. As promised we have since followed up with implementation and execution. I am pleased to note that we are now seeing verifiable progress across several areas, ranging from new Visa on Arrival scheme, to reforms at our ports and regulatory agencies.

8. The President also promised that 2017 would see the rollout of Executive Orders to facilitate government approvals, support procurement of locally made goods, and improve fiscal responsibility. We have kept that promise. This month we issued three Executive Orders to make it easier for citizens to get the permits and licenses they require for their businesses, to mandate Government agencies to spend more of their budgets on locally produced goods, and to promote budget transparency and efficiency. The overarching idea is to make Government Agencies and Government budgets work more efficiently for the people.

9. The impact of our Ease of Doing Business work is gradually being felt by businesses small and large; its successful take-off has allowed us to follow up with the MSME Clinics -our Small Business support programme, which has taken us so far to Aba, Sokoto, Jos, Katsina, and we expect to be in all other states in due course.

10. Let me note, at this point, that several of our Initiatives are targeted at our young people, who make up most of our population. From N-Power, to the Technology Hubs being developed nationwide, to innovation competitions such as the Aso Villa Demo Day, and our various MSME support schemes, we will do everything to nurture the immense innovative and entrepreneurial potential of our young people. We are a nation of young people, and we will ensure that our policies and programmes reflect this.

11. One of the highlights of our Power Sector Recovery Programme, which we launched in March, is a N701 billion Naira Payment Assurance Scheme that will resolve the financing bottlenecks that have until now constrained the operations of our gas suppliers and generation companies. Let me assure that you will soon begin to see the positive impact of these steps.

12. Our Solid Minerals Development Fund has also now taken off, in line with our commitment to developing the sector. Because of our unerring focus on Solid Minerals development over the last two years, the sector has, alongside Agriculture, seen impressive levels of growth – in spite of the recession.

13. On the whole, just as the President promised in the Budget Speech, these early months of 2017 have seen the flowering of the early fruit of all the hard work of our first eighteen months.

14. We opened the year with an overwhelmingly successful Eurobond Offer – evidence of continuing investor interest in Nigeria. We have also launched the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) 2017-2020, to build on the gains of last year’s Strategic Implementation Plan. And the implementation of our 2017 Budget, which will soon be signed into law, will bring added impetus to our ongoing economic recovery. In the 2016 Budget we spent 1.2 Trillion Naira on infrastructure projects, another milestone in the history of this country. Our 2017 Budget will double that investment.

15. That budget also provides for substantial investment to implement the rollout of Industrial Parks and Special Economic Zones (SEZs), as well as our Social Housing Programme. The Industrial Parks and Economic Zones will fulfill our ambition of making Nigeria a manufacturing hub, while the Family Home Fund of our Social Housing Programme will provide inexpensive mortgages for low-income individuals and families across the country.

16. These plans offer yet more evidence that we are ramping up the pace of work; the work of fulfilling all that we promised. In the next two years we will build on the successes of the last two. We have demonstrated a willingness to learn from our mistakes and to improve on our successes. The critical points that we must address fully in the next two years are : Agriculture and food security, Energy, (power and Petroleum,) Industrialization and Transport infrastructure. Every step of the way we will be working with the private sector, giving them the necessary incentives and creating an environment to invest and do business.

17. Our vision is for a country that grows what it eats and produces what it consumes. It is for a country that no longer has to import petroleum products, and develops a lucrative petrochemical industry. Very importantly it is for a country whose fortunes are no longer tied to the price of a barrel of crude, but instead to the boundless talent and energy of its people, young and old, male and female as they invest in diverse areas of the economy.

18. And that vision is also for a country where the wealth of the many will no longer be stolen by or reserved for a few; and where the impunity of corruption – whether in the public or private sectors – will no longer be standard operating practice; a land rid of bandits and terrorists.

19. As citizens you all deserve a country that works, not merely for the rich or connected, but for everyone. And our promise to you is that we will, with your support and cooperation, take every step needed to create that country of our dreams.

20. We also know that this journey will of necessity take time. But we will not succumb to the temptation to take short-cuts that ultimately complicate the journey. We did not find ourselves in crises overnight, and we simply do not expect overnight solutions to our challenges.

21. The most important thing is that we are on the right path, and we will not deviate from it, even in the face of strong temptation to choose temporary gain over long-term benefit. As the President has summed it up: “The old Nigeria is slowly but surely disappearing, and a new era is rising.”

22. And so we commemorate this second anniversary of our administration with confidence and optimism. I firmly believe that we have put the most difficult phase behind us; and we are witnesses to the ever-increasing intensity of the light at the end of the tunnel. We ask for your continued cooperation and support, to enable us realise all our best intentions and ambitions for Nigeria. On our part We will continue to carry you along on this journey, speak to you, explain the challenges, and share our Vision.

23. And while we all daily pre-occupy ourselves with pursuing the Nigerian Dream – which is the desire to better our lives and circumstances vigorously and honestly – it is inevitable that grievances and frustrations will arise from time to time.

24. This is normal. What is not normal, or acceptable, is employing these frustrations as justification for indulging in discrimination or hate speech or hateful conduct of any kind, or for seeking to undermine by violent or other illegal means the very existence of the sovereign entity that has brought us all together as brothers and sisters and citizens.

25. Nigeria belongs to all of us. No one person or group of persons is more important or more entitled than the other in this space that we all call home. And we have a responsibility to live in peace and harmony with one another, to seek peaceful and constitutional means of expressing our wishes and desires, and to resist all who might seek to sow confusion and hatred for their own selfish interests.

26. Before I end this speech, let me ask for your continued prayers for the restoration to full health and strength and the safe return of our President.

27. I congratulate all of you on today’s commemoration of this important day in the democratic calendar our country. Nigeria is on a journey of greatness, and together we shall arrive at the destination of our dreams.

28. May God bless you all, and bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Lagos Chapel Members Desert Church Over Sacking Of Presiding Chaplain

The Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja was a shadow of itself on Sunday during the Sunday service as many members of the church did not show up.
It was observed that the chapel was sparsely filled as the service, which usually ended around 1pm, was brought to a close at 11.30am.

The Punch observed that of the 30 church members that were supposed to be part of the birthday thanksgiving service for the month of May, only nine were present.

From prayer session led by the Chaplain, Very Rev. Ayo Oyadotun, to the choir ministration, the general theme was overcoming difficult times and fighting forces seeking to scatter the church.

Recall that the Presiding Chaplain, Venerable Femi Taiwo, was sacked by the Governing Council of the church allegedly on the orders of the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Taiwo was said to have been sacked for “disrespecting” Ambode’s wife, Bolanle.

Mrs. Ambode was said to have attended the chapel on Sunday, May 14, for an anointing service.

She was reported to have stormed out of the church for not being recognised by the chaplain during the service.

By 1pm the following day, Pastor Taiwo was sacked and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate the vicarage with his wife and kids.

The government asked his assistant, Oyadotun to take over the mantle of leadership of the church.

Many Nigerians expressed disappointment at the action of Ambode, asking him to call his wife to order and rescind the decision.

On Saturday, the Lagos State Government, due to the backlash that trailed the report, shifted the thanksgiving service for the Lagos@50 celebration from the chapel to the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Alausa.

In an interview with The Punch, Taiwo’s bishop at the African Church, Rt. Rev. Michael Adeyemi said the church was embarrassed by the action of the Lagos first family.

He noted that Bolanle’s action, in particular, was ungodly and sacrilegious, adding that she must apologise for disrespecting a minister of God due to her ego.

It was gathered that the governing council and the church’s committee had been under pressure from the state government to manage the issue of the pastor’s sack.

When contacted, the Chairman of CAN, Lagos State, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, and CAN’s Secretary, Israel Akinadewo, declined comments over the incident.

“I have no comment, my son,” Bamgbola said.

Important Things True Christians Should Stop Doing

by Charisma News
Before you read the following, I want you to know that these are things I am guilty of, too. Like I tell my church all the time: “I’m preaching to myself!” When it comes to following Christ, we are all a work in progress.

For those who know me, you are familiar with my personality, so you will be able to decipher my tone and picture me smiling as you read this. For those of you who don’t know me, try to picture me smiling as you read on.

So, go ahead and laugh, love, and perhaps even whisper, “Ouch.”

And just so there’s no confusion, the word Christian is defined as someone who professes Christ and embraces His teachings. Not only are the four gospels about Him, the entire Bible is Him because He is the Living Word.

Here is a list of the things I believe Christ followers should cease and desist in their lives:

Quit expecting the world to like you.
Jesus said it would hate you (John 15:18-27, Matthew 10:22).

Quit throwing your own teammates under the bus.
We’re called to build each other up, not tear each other down. In fact, Jesus said that our love for each other proves to the world that we are really His true disciples (John 13:35, 1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Quit gossiping.
This includes sharing “juicy prayer requests” with no intention of actually praying (Psalms 34:13, Psalms 101:5, Ephesians 4:29).

Quit replacing prayer with “good vibes” and “positive thoughts”.
No. Just no. Prayer moves the hand of God and the hand of God moves the world. Prayer is much more effective than making someone feel warm and fuzzy inside. By the way, I’m not saying positive thoughts and good vibes are wrong (and they do make you feel good), I’m just saying prayer trumps them both (2 Corinthians 1:11, Philippians 1:19, Ephesians 6:18, James 5:16).

Quit saying repentance isn’t necessary.
It is. Jesus said so. And just so you know, there are 53 references to repentance in the New Testament. Now go repent (Matthew 5:17, Acts 3:19, Romans 2:5, 2 Peter 3:9, 1 John 1:9).

Quit saying that the “portions of the Bible that make you feel uncomfortable” are irrelevant and nothing more than dated writings.
All 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and 31,102 verse are the inspired Word of God. So the next time you think about throwing out the Old Testament, just remember that Jesus quoted it numerous times in all four gospels (John 1:1-4, John 1:14, 2 Timothy 3:16).

Quit expecting unbelievers/non-Christians to understand the Bible and/or to live like Christ.
It’s hard enough for Christians to live like Christ and it’s impossible to do so without Him (until the blinders are removed) (2 Corinthians 4:4, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:24-25).

Quit acting like the Great Commission
(Go into all the world to preach the gospel) is the Great Suggestion. It’s a command. Go already (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15).

Quit thinking that it’s OK to be silent about your faith.
Yes, it’s just as important to represent Jesus by how we live, but someone can’t respond to the Good News without hearing it … and they can’t hear it if no one opens their mouth (Matthew 10:27, Romans 10:14-15).

Quit being more passionate about your political affiliation than your relationship with Jesus.
If 99 percent of what you post on social media consists of bashing government officials and presidential candidates—you’re doing more damage than good (Romans 13:1-7, 2 Chronicles 7:14).

Quit your legalistic rants, knee-jerk reactions, and judgmentalism.
You’re turning people off. You’re making good news bad news. Jesus befriended sinners. Try it and great things will happen (Mark 2:17, Luke 5:27-32, 1 Timothy 1:15-16).

Quit calling yourself a Christian if you believe there are multiple paths that lead to salvation.

Jesus said that He’s the only way to heaven. If you don’t believe Him, you’re not a Christ follower (John 14:6, 1 John 2:4).

Quit living like everybody’s going to heaven and nobody’s going to hell.

Jesus died so the whole world could be saved, but He said the path to heaven is narrow and few find it. And for the record, He preached more about hell than heaven…
 #LeadLikeJesus (Matthew 7:13-14).

Quit acting like you’re better than those who don’t know Jesus.

You’re not (Luke 18:19, Acts 10:34, Romans 2:11-13).

Quit criticizing loving believers who take a biblical stand for godly morals and Christian values (that are crystal clear in Scripture)

Just because you’re too much of a wimp to take a stand yourself. Jesus didn’t call us to be politically correct. Develop some backbone. And yes, I said wimp. And yes, I will repent for calling you a wimp (Acts 4-6).

Quit being a jerk, period.

Whatever your position is (on anything), if you can’t communicate it in love, you’re a clanging cymbal and your message is worthless. So yeah, I probably shouldn’t have called you a wimp in No. 16 (1 Corinthians 13).

Quit defending sin.

Quit hating sinners. These are equally important. Oh yeah, and lose your critical lens (Psalm 97:10, Matthew 22:37-39).

Quit using the phrase “he who’s without sin cast the first stone” out of context.

The next thing Jesus said was, “Go and sin no more” (John 8:1-11).

PDP Leaders Want Jionathan To Forget His 2019 Ambition

*Party may concede presidential ticket to the North
*Ekweremadu, Akpabio, others for VP slot
Some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party are reportedly mounting pressure on ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to shelve his alleged ambition to contest the 2019 presidential election.

It was said that the leaders’ advisory was subtly relayed to the ex-President through his supporters who were trying to gauge the opinions of PDP members on the issue.

The party looks likely to concede its presidential ticket to the North irrespective of who, between Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff, wins the PDP leadership contest at the Supreme Court.

Party sources said Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio, and some governors are being considered as presidential running mate.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that the party is already repositioning itself for a major battle with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2019 elections.

It was gathered that while many party leaders still have a lot of affection for Jonathan for “keeping faith with his transition programme” and want him to have a fresh shot at the presidency, others strongly believe that it will be difficult to sell his candidature to the majority of Nigerian voters.

Based on realistic permutations, some PDP leaders have been mounting pressure on Jonathan to forego his ambition in the interest of the party.

A top source in PDP said: “Although we are awaiting the decision of the Supreme Court on the leadership of our party, we have gone far with our homework.

“A realistic option we have faced is the fact that to win in 2019, we have to retain our presidential ticket in the North. The PDP is still solid in the South-East and in the South-South.

“We have however come to appreciate that conceding the ticket to ex-President Jonathan might not work considering ethnic colouration which beclouded the last presidential election.

“The allegations raised against some key actors in Jonathan’s government, including ex-First Lady have made the choice of the ex-President a hard sell.”

Responding to a question, he added: “PDP leaders have subtly passed the message to Jonathan.

“We are however leaving the ticket open to the North. We anticipate that some defectors from APC might add more strength to our search for a candidate that can beat to the game.

“We want to try as much as possible to provide alternatives to APC. Of recent, ex-Governor Sule Lamido is the only leader who has come out with his presidential aspiration.

“Even when an attempt was made to enable the Forum of former Ministers to endorse Lamido, it was rejected.”

The source listed the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, the Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Akpabio, and some governors (whose names were not revealed) as some of those being considered for the VP slot.

“Certainly, the PDP will pick its running mate from either the South-East or the South-South.

“Our search team said it is impossible for the party to look forward to the South-West because of the grip of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the ongoing consolidation in the zone by APC.”

The Wedding That Never Happened [inspirational story]

Written by Kaycee Okuma
Nonso and Ada were two love birds who just couldn’t keep away from each other. Everybody in the village knew that it was a sure thing that one day they would get married. So it was not a big surprise when Nonso and his kinsmen came to Ada’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage. A date was soon fixed for the wedding. Ada and Nonso were extremely excited and looked forward to their wedding. They were counting down to that great day.

One day, Nonso came to Ada’s house to see her. He told her that he was going for a very important business trip and would be back in two days.

They bid each other goodbye. It was a normal thing. Nonso often travelled to buy goods for his business. Nobody smelt danger or tragedy in the offing. Nonso travelled the next morning and was involved in a ghastly crash that killed him on the spot.

When the news got to Ada, she was devastated. How could this happen? All the wedding plans had been made – they were just counting down to the ceremony. Ada was in shock. She locked herself up in her room and wept inconsolably. Within a few days, Ada was an emotional wreck. Her parents were alarmed. All their entreaties to her fell on deaf ears.

Everyone was confused. No one knew what to do.

This went on for three long months! Then one day, Ada came to herself: “How long will I continue like this? Nonso my love is dead, but I know he would want me to go on with my life.” And that morning, for the first time in three months, Ada took a refreshing bath, put on her best dress and went out to visit friends. In no time, Ada’s life took a new turn. She began to socialize, and one short year later, she met Arinze, a young executive of a major corporation, and they were married six months later.

MORAL: Life is not always fair. We may not be able to control all the events of our lives but within us is what it takes to overcome every challenge – if we don’t quit.

75-year old US prisoner whose execution was delayed 7 times has now been put to death

An inmate in Alabama who was famous for escaping his execution 7 times due to legal challenges is finally dead. 75 year old Tommy Arthur was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m today at a southwest Alabama prison after a lethal injection.
Arthur was convicted of killing riverboat engineer Troy Wicker, who was fatally shot as he slept in his bed in the north Alabama city of Muscle Shoals in 1982.

Arthur was sentenced to death for the 1982 contract killing of Troy Wicker. Prosecutors say that Arthur, who was serving life at the time for fatally shooting his sister-in-law, had an affair with Wicker’s wife, Judy, while in a work-release program and that she paid him $10,000 to kill her husband.
The state set seven execution dates for Arthur between 2001 and 2016. All were delayed as a pro bono legal team fought his sentence.

Arthur, in a round of phone calls to reporters earlier this week, maintained he’s innocence in the Wicker shooting telling the Associated Press, “I’m terrified, but there’s nothing I can do. I’ve got hope in my legal team’.

Abductors of six students in Lagos actually wrote to the school management informing them of their plans to attack the school

Abductors of the Igbonla Model School, Igbonla near Epe in Lagos actually wrote to the management of the school before storming the school premises yesterday May 25th. According to accounts given by some teachers of the school, the abductors sent a letter to the school three days earlier to inform them of plans to storm the school.

The management of the school then informed the police and some policemen were drafted to the school to keep guard.

However the abductors were still able to storm the school and kidnap students with little or no resistance. The Lagos state police command says it is on the trail of the abductors and that the abducted students would be rescued while the suspects would be apprehended.

I'm not using Moji Olaiya's death to seek popularity' – Foluke Daramola's husband speaks

Foluke Daramola’s husband, Kayode Salako has once again spoken to clear the air on his earlier comment on the death and burial committee set up for late Nollywood actress.

According to him, his comment was not meant to to seek publicity for himself, rather he was advocating for the right purpose to be achieved. See his post below….

“What other popularity would I have been looking for in all of this? I have been talking on national television stations in the past 15 years; my wife is an A’ list Nollywood celebrity of about 25 years stardom. I have featured in more than 300 news and celebrity journals as a prominent public affairs analyst; activist and social commentator. And I have taught more than 20,000 students as a seasoned educationist of more than 26 years since 1989. So, what is that popularity I am still looking for around anybody’s death that even that of my own wife cannot pull for me? This is not about looking for popularity, but about advocating for the right purpose to be achieved…”

To God who made me I did not pass through that place again…Later on the 20th of may at about 9pm I was coming from my mum place with my Son and my friend Ruth.
It was late and we were rushing home. Getting in front of Andy Obada’s Compound, (His a Tenant) that compound is a short-cut to my house. I didn’t pass through the compound but I saw people passing there.
In front of the compound, he was sitting down with a friend smoking. This was past 9:00pm. I asked him if this is not people passing through the compound why is my own different?
He immediately stood up got angry and walked towards me throw away the cigarette he was smoking and told me that he has warned me not to pass through the compound. (Andy is just a tenant in this compound)
I then replied him that people do pass here, what have I done to warrant all these embarrassment.
He slapped me and started beating me in presence of my son and friend. I fell on the floor and he beat me and his friend that was with him was now telling me I shouldn’t have asked him that question and that I deserve the beating I was given.
I couldn’t see clearly and I immediately hold him and started calling out for help and his friend joined him and they both beat me. By this time I was bleeding heavily. My friend took me and my son home.
The next morning I reported the case to Divisional Police Station Ughelli and they gave me a report to go and treat myself and that they will arrest Andy Obada.

After I was discharged from hospital, the police make effort to arrest Andy Obada , but he was no where to be found.
24th May, I went to the police station again and met Andy Obada there writing a statement. The Police told me that me and my brothers destroyed his properties and injured him. The only thing that was destroy was his AC that he push me to which i fell on it.
The police are now changing the case that it is two fighting and Breach of Peace that I was not supposed to ask him that question why I shouldn’t pass through the compound.
I was detained for hours and later released on bail after paying #3000 all because the man who beat me has money and I don’t have anything or anyone to stand for me”

"Buhari Is Doing Well, He Will Win Presidential Election Again"; says Garba Shehu

The Presidency on Tuesday said if another presidential election were to be held today, President Muhammadu Buhari would still win like he did in 2015.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this while addressing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was joined by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Mr. Femi Adesina; and the SSA on Media and Publicity to the Acting President, Laolu Akande.

Shehu said Nigerians were happy with Buhari and would still vote for him despite whatever the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) and other opposition parties might be saying.

He said the confidence reposed in Buhari by ordinary Nigerians had remained unshaken because the President, according to him, is doing what Nigerians want.

Customs Intercepts Container-Load Of Arms In Lagos Port

The Nigerian Customs has again intercepted another container-load of arms and ammunition at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.
The container was found at the Ports and Cargo Terminal of the Tin Can Island Ports.

Recall that in January this year, Customs had intercepted a container of 49 boxes containing 661 Ak 47 rifles in Lagos.

This is also coming as stern warning against a military coup came, yesterday, from some concerned Nigerians.

The leading All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had however warned those contemplating the derailment of the country’s democracy to perish the thought.

Tinubu spoke in Lagos just as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, echoed the same sentiments, warning the populace that the worst civilian regime was far better than the best of military regimes.

Nigerian Pastor, Dayo Epenusi, Shot Dead In US

Police in Indianapolis district, United States of America, have launched a manhunt for the killer of a Nigerian pastor, Oluwadayomisi Epenusi.

According to Fox News, the 66 year old Nigerian was shot to death at the weekend at an apartment complex near 10th Street and I-465 on the city’s west side.
Friends and neighbors said Pastor Epenusi had only recently moved to Indiana from Nigeria where he worked as a pastor

Neighbors say they heard a series of gunshots early Saturday morning.
“I heard about 15 gunshots. It was nuts,” said neighbor Kristina Teague. Teague called 911, but by the time police arrived the victim had run back to his apartment and a roommate then drove the bleeding man to Eskenazi Hospital where he died, unable to explain to his roommate what led up to the shooting.
“The roommate said when he was on the way he asked him what happened and why he got shot, but the man couldn’t say nothing because he was still in pain,” said Moshood Kafaru.
Kafaru moved to the United States from Nigeria, as did the victim who worked as a pastor. “He was just a nice person who would go to work and come home and go to church. He didn’t talk to nobody. He never bothered nobody,” said Kafaru. Police don’t know for sure, but Kafaru believes the violence started as a robbery.
“He was holding a purse. He refused to let it go. They thought he had money in the purse, but he didn’t want to let it go,” said Kafaru. A large group of Nigerians live in the apartment complex and those that knew Epenusi say he had been working hard to help his kids to move to the United States.

“They just got a visa. That why he was working, so his family can come over here,” said Kafaru. “He was just an innocent man and it just upsets me that he’s gone just like that. It’s really sad because he was here sending money to his family,” said Teague. Police have asked people with information to contact Crime Stoppe

Man killed as 3 brothers fight for control of Banana Junction Motor Park

The battle between three siblings over the leadership of Banana Junction motor park at Amaifeke in Orlu Council Area of Imo State turned tragic when a stray bullet allegedly fired by a policeman killed a passerby identified as one Remigius Enwerem. The police team was allegedly brought by the Ozioma and Ozoemena Agubata group to apparently dislodge the boys of their younger brother Nkeonyere from the park.

It was gathered that the battle for control of the park between the three siblings started in February when another innocent passer-by was also hit by a stray bullet when the siblings also clashed. But it was learnt that Nkeonyere Agubata had spent his personal money to treat the gunshot victim to save his life.

It was further learnt that the two elder brothers, who allegedly have the backing of another local strongman (names withheld), were not comfortable with their younger brother’s control of the motor park. With the ardent backing of the local strongman, Ozioma and Ozoemena stormed the park with a horde of thugs and about 40 policemen led by the Area Commander who promptly arrested some of the boys working for Nkeonyere.

Recounting what happened, a source told Sunday Sun: “The battle over the park by the three siblings of the same parents began last Sunday (May 14) when Ozioma and Ozoemena with their boys came with about 40 policemen led by the Area Commander and arrested Chukwuebuka Amadi, Onyemauche Mba, Uchechukwu Okafor, Chinedu Okafor and Abraham who work for Nkeonyere at the park.

After, the police had taken them away Ozioma and Ozoemena then put their boys at the park.

But when the police left, Nkeonyere returned to the park with more of his boys and sacked the boys of his elder brothers from the park and took effective control.”

Similarly, the wife of the embattled chairman of the motor park, Mrs. Chiamaka Nkeonyere Agubata disclosed to Sunday Sun that in the early morning of Friday, the two elder brothers came to their house with armed policemen to arrest her husband.

Her words: “Around 5 am on Friday, Ozioma and Ozoemena came with armed policemen to our house and asked for my husband. I told them that he had travelled but they forcefully entered the house and after searching the entire house they did not show me whatever they took. But before leaving the policemen gave me a written note that my husband should report to the SCID as requested by the state Commissioner of Police, but when my husband returned from his trip he discovered that some money he kept in his room was missing.”

She further revealed that one of their neighours had alerted them last Sunday morning that armed policemen in five Toyota Hilux vans who were accompanied by Ozioma and Ozoemena and their boys had already surrounded their house.

Continuing, she said: “When I received the call from our neighour I told my husband because we had already left for the market at Amaifeke at Banana Junction but as Ozioma sighted him around the market he rushed at him and tried to hold him so that the police would be able to bundle him into their van but as my husband was struggling to free himself from the grip of his brother, the leader of the police team ordered that he be shot and as one of the policemen opened fire, my husband was lucky to slip out of his hands and managed to dodge the bullet which hit Remigius Enwerem, who was just passing.

Instead of the policemen to assist the victim they all fled and abandoned him in his pool of blood. It was later when my husband came back that he tried to rush him to the Imo State University Teaching Hospital but he died on the way and his body was later deposited at the mortuary.”

When he spoke with The Sun, Nkeonyere alleged that his elders brothers were being sponsored by the local strongman, who is being driven by greed. He implored the Inspector General of Police, the Imo State governor and the Commissioner of Police to save him from being killed as his life is under threat.

However, when contacted, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike said he was aware that the National Union of Road Transport Workers had a problem at the park and that the Area commander of Orlu had already made some arrest and that the matter was being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). He affirmed that nobody was killed and that peace had been restored to the motor park.

Nothing must happen to Fani-Kayode, South/Middle-Belt group replies North

Youths under the aegis of Southern and Middle Belt Allied Youths (SAMBAY) have replied their northern counterparts over the alleged threat the Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) issued against Femi Fani-Kayode, warning that nothing must happen to the Ex-Minister.
A statement jointly signed by Fidelis Ujah (Middle Belt), Onyema Ukachukwu (South East) and Mustapha Olasubomi (South West) after an emergency meeting on Sunday warned that the Ex-Minister must not be intimidated for making a critique of the current All Progressives Congress, APC-led government.

The group said it knows that it is the AYF that is pursuing purely selfish interests by insisting that power must remain in the north when their definition of “north” has clearly over the years excluded the middle belt region.

The meeting was called by the group to discuss the alleged threats that, according to it, have not only been issued by what it termed northern elements against Femi Fani-Kayode but also against the other parts of the country in recent times as regards permutations for 2019.

It also wondered why Arewa would think it can continue to deceive the Middle Belt to curry their support when it needs political power but would immediately abandon them afterwards.

“We wonder where these Arewa Youths have been all this while that their cousins, the Fulani herdsmen terrorists, have been killing citizens with impunity in Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau and such other states. They never condemned them because they do not see people from these parts as one of them except for election purposes. Even in Southern Kaduna that is further up north, indigenes were killed without these Arewa saying anything.

“We find their silence on these issues most reprehensible and signs of deep-seated hatred for other parts of the country.

“It is based on this that we have come together to say NEVER will we allow anything untoward to happen to Chief Femi Fani-Kayode who has been speaking up for us and our people against the tyranny and despotism of the Buhari administration and his Hausa/Fulani disciples.

“We have lost more people in the South and the Middle Belt in the two years under Buhari than we have done since 1999 to May 2015. Do we allow Arewa and their threats to those who defend and speak up for us pass unchallenged or do we stand up to them and say enough is enough? Our people have chosen the latter.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we want to make it categorically clear that under no circumstances shall we allow anyone no matter who they think they are to threaten Fani-Kayode. Nothing must happen to him or any member of his family.

“We call on the law enforcement agencies to take notice of such needless threats from AYF as we are more than ready to respond adequately and commensurately to any action the Arewa Youths might be planning to take.

“Enough is enough,” the statement concluded.

Female Student: "lecturer impregnated me, rejects pregnancy | Lecturer: "I used condom"

A lecturer at Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilese Ijebu, Dr Oluseyi Adu, and a Dental Nursing student, Mosunmola, are embroiled in a row over who is responsible for the pregnancy that the nursing student is carrying.Mosunmola, who is nine months pregnant, alleged that Dr. Adu was responsible for the child in her womb, adding that they had s*x in a hotel sometime in August, 2016.

She said the lecturer beat her up last month when she confronted him at the college for avoiding her, adding that the case was already at the Ilese Police Station.

However, while Dr. Adu admitted to having s*x with the 28-year-old, he insisted that he used contraceptive, saying the lady seduced him and he gave in to the temptation.

Mosunmola told The Punch that she underwent a 3-year course at the college, adding that several lecturers had asked her out before Dr. Adu, but she refused.

She said, “Dr Adu is the Oral Health Coordinator for the college. During my three years study, he taught me two courses each semester. I have never failed his course.

“When I got to second semester, 300 level, he awarded me 38 in one of his courses. I went to his office in August 2016 to know why I failed the course. I needed to pass all my courses to be able to go for my board exam.

“He asked me if I thought I could just come to the school and go like that. He said if I dated him, he would waive the course. He said he didn’t approach me in 100 level because another lecturer was interested in dating me.

“The lecturer he mentioned told me in 100 level that it was either I paid him money or used my body to pass his course. Because I didn’t agree, I failed his course. I didn’t pass it until I got to 300 level.

“I told Dr. Adu that I would date him, but I didn’t want to have any problem, and he assured me that there would be no regret.”

The victim said the lecturer took her to the office of the Head of Department and after some discussions, it was agreed that she could sit for the board exam.

After the board exam at POGIL College of Health Technology, Oke-Eri, Ijebu Ode, on August 21, Adu, who was among those on the panel, was said to have given Mosunmola some of his practical instruments and a laptop for safekeeping.

However, Mosunmola said when the school bus arrived to take the students back to the school, she forgot to give the practical instruments back to the lecturer.

She said Dr. Adu later called and asked her to bring the instruments to a hotel where he lodged.

“I was preparing to leave when he called me back that I would be sleeping over with him.

“I met him with another lecturer in my department. I observed that the lecturer also had a female student with him. From the hotel, we went to different places before we finally lodged in another hotel along Ilese Road. While I was with Dr. Adu in a room, my other classmate passed the night with the second lecturer in another room.

We had three rounds of s*x. He didn’t release on time. He used two condoms for the first two rounds. The third round was, however, flesh-to-flesh. That was when he ejaculated inside me,” she explained.

She said the lecturer dropped her off at home and they continued their relationship, until she stopped seeing her menstruation a few weeks later.

The Ogun State indigene said she became worried after she started vomiting, adding that she took a pregnancy test, which was positive.

She said when Adu heard the news, he reluctantly accepted responsibility, but allegedly gave her a drug, Eprostol, to abort the pregnancy.

She said, “I refused to take the drug because the prescription was not from a medical doctor. He came down to my place to persuade me to take the drug, but I still refused. He asked me what I wanted and I told him that I needed to change my accommodation because the pregnancy was a shameful thing for me. He told me not to worry, that he would handle it. After that, we had s*x [again].

“When he left that day, I could not find my phone again. By the time I got another phone and called him, he started acting funny. Sometime, he would just laugh at me.”

It was learnt that several people had attempted to mediate in the situation without any success.

Mosunmola said attempts by Dr,. Adu’s HOD, dean, and provost to mediate were rebuffed by the lecturer.

The victim said she later approached the Human Rights Office of the Ogun State Ministry of Justice at Ijebu-Ode, where a lawyer, one Kolade, called the parties for a meeting.

Adu was reported to have agreed to pay N5,000 feeding allowance per month, in addition to paying N7,000 for ante-natal registration.

After paying the allowance for two months, Adu reportedly stopped.

The parties held another meeting in March at the human rights office to review the agreement.

Conflict was said to have broken out among the parties when Mosunmola presented a list of things required for her delivery, which she valued at N50,000.

Dr. Adu was said to have insisted on paying N30,000, which the 28-year-old refused.

“I didn’t have any accommodation and I couldn’t buy any of the drugs the doctors prescribed for me. I told him I would only manage the N50,000. He left in annoyance.

“Since March, the lawyer didn’t call us back and Adu refused to pay the N5,000 he used to give me every month. I called the lawyer late March and asked him to help me get the N30,000, but the lawyer said I should not call him again,” she said.

After reporting the lecturer to the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Health, where Adu also worked, without any result, Mosunmola said she became desperate and went to the college on April 13 when she knew Adu would be taking a class.

She said while pleading with him for money for her medical expenses, the lecturer assaulted her.

She said some people intervened and she reported a case of assault to the police at the Ilese division, Ijebu Ode.

“I am now in my 38 weeks and anytime soon, I will have my child. I am an orphan and I don’t have any of my baby items ready. I am begging Nigerians to come to my rescue. I know I have made a mistake, but I need a second chance at life. I don’t have anywhere to go. It is a church that is accommodating me now,” she said.

When The Punch reached out to Adu to appeal to him to raise the N50,000 for the baby things, he said he had no money and would not borrow because Mosunmola had turned him to a “cash cow.”

He said he had already informed his wife about the incident, adding that there was nothing that could surprise him again as he had lost his credibility over the incident.

Adu said, “She was one of my students; but on a personal level, I never knew her until after they released her final results and she failed some courses, including mine.

“Her HOD asked her to come and ask me if I could waive the course for her. She called me on the phone and came to see me in the office. That was my first contact with this lady. When she made her request, I met her HOD who said I should assist her. He said even if I did, she might not sit for the board exam because of the other courses she failed. So, I passed her.

“When they sat for the board exam, I was surprised to see her and I asked her HOD why she wrote the exam when she had other courses she failed. He said people begged for her.

“After the board exam, she came to thank me for the assistance and she asked to carry my bag and the instruments I used to conduct the exam. By the time she was leaving, I collected my bag from her, but I forgot my instruments with her.

“That day, I went to hang out with my friend at the pool of a hotel where we lodged. Suddenly, I remembered my instruments and I called her to keep them well. But she said she could come to where I was and she came. After dropping the instruments, she didn’t leave as I expected and I decided not to bother her.

“We were together at the hotel till evening. One thing led to the other. My brother, she slept in my room that night and we had (s*xual) inter-course. This was a girl I never dated or had any relationship with.”

He said by weekend, Mosunmola called him that she was pregnant, adding that she later said she was only joking about it and wanted to see his reaction.

Dr. Adu said the call made him to stop communicating with Mosunmola and he did not respond anytime she called, until she sent him a text message saying the pregnancy had become real.

He said, “I decided to travel down to Ijebu to see her. She brought out the test result and said I was responsible. I told her I used a condom and she couldn’t tell me that my condom burst. She said if I was afraid because I was married, I should not bother because the pregnancy actually belonged to her boyfriend and she merely wanted to see my reaction. I warned her and left.

The next time she called me, she said how would she take my pregnancy to her boyfriend, and that I should take responsibility for it. She said she would abort the pregnancy if I wanted her to, but I must rent a house for her in Ijebu Ode and then she described the kind of house she wanted.

When I heard that, I told her to do her worst, because it was obvious to me that she just wanted to blackmail me. She had been going round different places, telling people that I impregnated her. The question I ask is, did I rape her? Did I hypnotise her? You came to meet me where I was and we had fun, and now you are pregnant, and you are telling me I am responsible for a pregnancy I am denying?”

He said before Mosunmola could reach his wife, he quickly reported himself to her and settled.

The medical practitioner said he reluctantly agreed to pay the N5,000 after much persuasion by the human rights lawyer, adding that he regretted the agreement because Mosunmola used it to make more demands on him.

“When she brought the list for the baby things, I asked her, ‘Why are you making me as if I am the father of your baby? Am I your husband?

“She suddenly flared up and said I should even go away that she didn’t want anything from me again. She cursed me and after that encounter, I decided to stop giving her anything,” he added.

He said Mosunmola came to attack him during the lecture. He said she was about stripping him naked when he forcefully detached himself from her.

Adu explained that the case of assault against him at the Ilese division had been thrown out after he told the police the student was the aggressor.

“People impregnate people and nothing happens. Why is she treating me as if I had done something criminal?

“The worst that will happen now is for me to die. I am not a young man; if I die, people will cry and I will be done.

But I also ask myself, what if the pregnancy is mine? My prayer now is for her to deliver safely and we will determine the paternity of the child,” he said.

Nude Protest: Army Denies Molestation Of IPOB Women

The Nigerian Army has denied molesting members of the women wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Abia State.
IPOB, through its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, had on Friday alleged that the women were beaten up and their cloths torn by soldiers during their meeting in Abiriba.

But a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, described the allegation as funny and comical, saying there was no element of truth in the accusation.

It maintained that the leadership of the Division is rather intensifying efforts in further training of troops on civilian protection/respect for human rights in and out of conflict situations.

The statement read in part: “Let me make it clear that the drama and the allegation that follow are deliberately staged by IPOB. The allegation, just like others before it, – is false, sheer IPOB’s propaganda to discredit the Nigerian Army.

“Hence, I was able to confirm from the officer in charge of patrol of Abiriba and its environs, Major Danjuma Ali and the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Abiriba, Superintendent Titus Ugwuoke who briefed me – there was no truth in IPOB’s accusation.

“On Thursday,18 May 2017, at about 1705 hours, soldiers of 14 Brigade Ohafia on routine patrol in Abiriba general area, received a distressed call alerting them of massive presence of IPOB women wing in Abiriba township stadium. Most of them (the women) were carrying Biafran flags, banners and other insignia. Majority were dressed in Biafran T-shirts.

“Instant intelligence revealed that majority of the women came from Aba, Awka, Onitsha, Owerri and Port Harcourt axis as reflected on the various banners exhibited in the stadium.

“By Friday 19, May 2017, at about 0930 hours, women in large number surged towards the stadium. At that point, the patrol team moved close to the arena, with intent to monitor them further. On sighting the team, the women ran out, removed part of their dresses and converged on an alternate venue where the Divisional Police Officer, Abiriba and His Majesty Eze Ogbu of Abiriba addressed the gathering. After the Eze’s address, they peacefully dispersed to their various destinations.

“His Royal Majesty Eze Ogbu has since briefed the local government chairman and members of the local government security council on the matter, and there was nothing to suggest that the women were rough handled or arrested”.

When you disrespect your man he stops seeing you as a lady & deals with you as a man

According to actor Williams Uche-Mbah, ladies should learn to control their mouth because if you feel comfortable to talk nasty to your man, he stops seeing your feminine side, starts seeing you as a fellow man and deals with you as such.

What I will add is that, a wise and well trained wife doesn’t take pleasure in insulting her husband, she prays for him and supports him emotional and spiritually.

If you keep insulting and disrespecting your man because he’s the calm type and doesn’t like people to hear negative stories about him, one day he will use his hands on him. When that happens don’t cry out saying “I didn’t do him anything… he’s a monster, etc.”

Women are wired to use their mouth, men are wired to use their hands. That is nature. So if you as a woman can’t control your mouth, you lack the right to tell a man to control his hands.

Check character, try to improve; build your home and help your husband remain a good man.

How Oba Of Lagos Reconciled Tinubu and I – Obanikoro

In this interview with The Punch’s Sunday Aborisade, former Minister of State (Defence), Senator Musiliu Obanikoro speaks about his reconciliation with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his rumoured defection to the All Progressives Congress.

There are claims that you have defected to the All Progressives Congress. Is this true?
In this instance, whatever step I am taking or will take later is about public interest. It is about the overall interest of the community that I represent, and my supporters who see me as their true representative. Politics is not static; it is very dynamic and when certain interest, especially the one that borders on public interest is challenged, a politician that is worth his onions must react immediately.

You have not answered the question. Is it true that you are now a member of the APC?
Let me categorically tell you that the report that I have defected to the APC is a rumour and it is still a rumour. If a personality like me will leave the Peoples Democratic Party to join another party, it will be done in a grand way. I would call a press conference and tell the whole world that I am moving (to another party). I will also explain the reasons for my defection. It will not be like the judgment given to the ABN (Association for Better Nigeria) which was delivered at night (9pm). If I want to defect, it will be done publicly with fanfare. I have no reason to make it a secret. Nigerians, especially the media, should just wait and relax for the appropriate time for me to declare my next political move.

Are you still in PDP?
As someone who has always been proactive, it behoves on me to start assessing the situation with a view to making a justifiable political decision that would be in my interest and in the interest of those who are looking up to me for the right direction to follow. The essence of all these is service to people. A situation whereby a group of people, who are not prepared for governance or ready to offer anything to the society are controlling a big party like the PDP, one should review his participation in such a party. I can tell you without mincing words that I am at that stage now. I am reviewing and assessing the options before me.

One thing that is certain is that if Sheriff wins at the Supreme Court, you will not find people like me in the party again. That is certain. Let us not also forget that all politics is local. Without mincing words, anybody can accuse me of anything.I am pleased with what Governor Akinwumi Ambode is doing in Lagos. If at the end of the day, I have to choose between a progressive like him or continue with a PDP being controlled by Sheriff, I would rather opt for the former.

What led to your reconciliation with Tinubu?
My reconciliation with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu did not just happen overnight. I want to thank the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, and my personal friend, Kashim Imam, for the reconciliation. The reconciliation was not meant to serve political interest but rather a personal and Lagos interest. Asiwaju and I belong to one family. If something untoward happens to a member of the family, we must see it as something that has happened to all of us. My relationship with Asiwaju prior to my defection to the Peoples Democratic Party, many years ago, was very cordial. I have also been close to kabiyesi (Oba Akiolu) to the extent that he got me enrolled in the Nigeria Police Force, when he was still an officer. I didn’t take the offer because as a young man then, I didn’t like the setup in the police. That was why I ran away. But I had already been enlisted as a cadet of the Nigeria Police Force from Lagos State. Oba Akiolu was shocked when he learnt that I didn’t take the offer. At a point, he started looking for me. He was really upset when he was told that I had returned to the United States. He wondered why I “wasted” the slot of Lagos State just like that. I share this incident to show you the extent of my closeness to kabiyesi. The issue did not, however, affect our relationship even up till today. So, he ensured the successful reconciliation. As a Yoruba man, I believe that when an elder intervenes on your behalf with another elder, that should be the end of the issue. Whatever comes out of the reconciliation is final.

Did you witness any form of attack from your colleagues and associates or did you carry them along in the reconciliation process?
I was happy that the reconciliation was done successfully. As I have said earlier, a very good friend of mine was also involved in the process. What has happened to me as regards my relationship with Asiwaju Tinubu should serve as a good lesson to the younger generation. Whenever you play your politics, always have it at the back of your mind that when you have disagreements, politically with someone, leave personal relationship out of it. Don’t allow your disagreement to affect the personal relationship you have with that person.

I was never comfortable all along that I lost personal relationship with Asiwaju Tinubu. We can always mend fences after political disagreements easily but it is the personal relationship that is crucial. There is also another person that I have been looking for a way to reconcile with. Don’t ask me for his name because I won’t tell you. We were extremely close before political difference tore our relationship apart. It is highly unfortunate that both of us allowed our disagreement politically to affect that relationship as friends. I will do everything possible to ensure that I reconcile with him too because he is also important to me.

Is it you or the Oba of Lagos that initiated the move to reconcile with Asiwaju Tinubu?
I don’t think that is of any importance. What is important is that Asiwaju and I have forgotten about the past and have reconciled. He is my leader, my elder brother and I respect him a lot.

You say you have not defected from PDP. What role are you playing in the party right now?
The situation that the PDP found itself today is not good for democracy in Nigeria. It is not the PDP that will lose at the end of the day, it is the country. There must be options in any viable democracy. The fact that some political actors, for their selfish interest, decided to collapse the party either by omission or commission, has succeeded in reducing the fortunes of the party to the state it is now. Most of the major current players within the party at both sides will not want to admit that they contributed to the PDP crisis; rather they will want to point accusing fingers at one another. For instance, I was out of the country when the idea of bringing (Ali Modu) Sheriff on board was mooted. I want to commend my colleagues, the former ministers in the ex-president Goodluck Jonathan government who vehemently opposed the idea openly and secretly. I didn’t speak publicly against it but I worked against it behind the scene. I was constantly in touch with those who were going to confirm his nomination. I told them that allowing him to be at the helm of affairs of the party will not serve the interest of the PDP. Unfortunately today, we are facing crisis in the party because of some people’s recklessness and selfishness. In any case, the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment will go a long way to determine what will be the fate of the PDP in Nigeria. With the crisis, the party has been weakened and that is why we lost the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states last year. To worsen the situation, the recklessness is still manifesting.

Do you think the people you left many years ago would trust you to the extent of embracing you back to their fold?
I have always been faithful to whoever I worked with. I don’t know how to play hide-and-seek. If I am with you, I remain with you. I have never had divided loyalty. Talking about trust, even the people you are talking about know me very well. They know that my yes is yes and my no is no. Since I am not joining a secret cult but to join hands with people who we will both work together in the interest of the people, the issue you raised does not arise at all. As a progressive, I am not averse to progressive thinking.

Are you planning to join the progressives so that you can contest the APC election in 2019?
I have said it earlier that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is really working hard and that his performance is impressive. We have to do everything possible to support him so that he can continue the good work.

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode making allusion to your reconciliation with Asiwaju, expressed concerns with the move. What is your reaction to this?
What I will say without any hesitation is that my good friend, Femi Fani-Kayode, is entitled to his own opinion and as a brother, I will not join issues with him on the pages of newspapers.

Don’t you think that the nation’s democracy is being threatened if everybody who is aggrieved with Sheriff leaves the PDP?
Can we really say that we have a democracy when the constitution we are still using was written by the military? Look at a situation where Kano State has 57 local government areas while Lagos with a higher population has 20 local government areas. There is no fairness and equity in such a constitution.

Do you think the anti-corruption war under President Buhari is on the right course?
I don’t think that you want me to answer that question. Honestly I don’t think so.

The PDP has been accusing the APC-led government of selective prosecution of the opposition in its anti-graft war, is this also your personal opinion?
I will speak on that issue at the appropriate time.

What type of reconciliation took place between you and the anti-graft agency before the money was reduced to N584m from the N4.7bn you allegedly collected from the office of the National Security Adviser?
To be honest with you, this is an issue that I will rather put behind me. I don’t want to talk about it.

Has your issue with the EFCC been finally resolved?
It is only the EFCC that can answer that question.

Did you use the Army to rig the Ekiti election as alleged in the audio tape leaked by an army captain?
I have said everything that needed to be said about the Ekiti tape issue. I did not participate in any rigging in that state. For the umpteenth time, let me say that there was no rigging in Ekiti. The former governor (Kayode Fayemi) lost the election because he was not popular. The matter is not as big as people are making it to look. It is a very simple matter. Anyone who witnessed the election knew the direction it would go. It was very obvious.

Is the Ekiti leaked tape where you allegedly gave instructions to the army captain, real or fabricated?
There is nowhere in that tape where I said that they should go and rig the election. Go and listen to that tape all over again. Those who are making comments should listen to the tape before talking. What I said in that tape was that the election must be seen to be free and fair. I also asked the man to go and do a good job. Don’t forget that (Governor Ayodele) Fayose was shouting that the military had compromised and that they were going to rig him out.

The Oba of Lagos was quoted to have said that Lagos is not part of Yorubaland. As an indigene of Lagos, do you agree with him?
I don’t believe that kabiyesi said that. He couldn’t have said something like that. I know kabiyesi very well. He is a good student of history. He is particularly vast in the history of Lagos. So, he couldn’t have categorically said that. Maybe he was making a reference to the obaship in Lagos. If that is the case, then he is very correct because the history of obaship in Lagos can be traced to Benin kingdom; nobody can dispute that. But aside from the oba, there are other settlements in Lagos which have nothing to do with Benin. The original owners of Lagos are the Aworis and there is no dispute about that. I think kabiyesi might have been quoted out of context. For instance, I am an Awori man, though I have the Benin blood in me because I am also related to the Eletu Odibo, the Prime Minister to the oba, who is also from Benin.

As a prominent indigene of Lagos and one who is very close to the Oba of Lagos, how do you think that the face-off between him and the Ooni of Ife can be resolved?
I don’t think there is any issue between the two monarchs again. It has been resolved and it is not as serious as people are talking about it.
