Heavy rains kills 117 people in Zimbabwe

At least 117 people have died due to torrential rains in Zimbabwe, while 106 others have been injured by lightning, Department of Civil Protection Unit (CPU) reported on Monday.

It was also reported that more than 1,930 houses and rural huts have been damaged countrywide, leaving 635 families homeless.

A total of 71 schools, five health institutions and 71 dams had their walls breached while several roads and bridges were washed away due to the incessant rains.

Zimbabwe has been receiving torrential rains since January, which is causing serious flooding.

Just last week, the country was hit by the downgraded Cyclone Dineo, particularly in the  Tsholotsho District, where at least 850 people including children and the elderly have been displaced by flooding.

The villagers have been safely evacuated and are currently being housed at a local primary school.

According to the deputy director of CPU, Sibusisiwe Ndlovu, she said they would soon embark on an exercise to draw up mitigation measures to reduce flooding and its effects in future.

Suspected armed cultist narrowly escapes lynching in Owerri

An armed man said to belong to a cult group in Owerri, Imo State, narrowly escaped lynching Tuesday by an angry mob at Alvan Guest House, Amakohia, Owerri. It was gathered that six alleged armed cultists stormed BET NAIJA house which was also a sports viewing center, and made away with two laptops. They also attacked a young man, who tried to stop them.

According to Ifeanyi Njoku, the suspects hit the victim’s head with a gun before fleeing.

However, one of them was caught and was nearly burnt to death, but for the intervention of Civil Defense officials and armed policemen, who arrived the scene and took the suspect away.

97 Nigerians deported from South Africa

The South African Government has deported 97 Nigerians, made up of 95 males and two females. The deportees, who allegedly committed various criminal offences, landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos in a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg, on Monday night, February 27th.

All the deportees were profiled by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) while those deported for drug related offences were handed over to the Police for further investigation.

Ghanaian Govt urged to make defence of homosexuals treasonable

A Christian body, Movement for the Kingdom Image (MFKI) has urged the government of President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo to enact laws that will make the defence of homosexuals a treasonable offence in the country. A statement issued and signed by the president of the group, Osempakani Kaakyire Kifi read:

‘The Movement for the Kingdom Image (MFKI) wants to entreat the Akufo-Addo government to immediately enact a legislation that would make a mere defence of homosexuality a treasonable offence to control the unnecessary defence of the sacrilegious and abominable act of lesbianism and [gayness] by some unscrupulous individuals and groups in the country. 

‘We believe Ghana is not ready now or ever to accept this inhuman and ungodly behaviour, but the government must show its commitment not just by word of mouth but rather by a law that will restrict people from trying to defend the act. 

‘We observed with the greatest disappointment and panic over the past week how the Amnesty International confidently and without any shame came out to defend and called for the legalisation of homosexuality in Ghana in the name of human rights observation.”

The statement added:

‘His Excellency the president of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has all the powers either to accept or decline the legalisation of the act, therefore, we are appealing to the president to see the need to enact harsh laws to deal recklessly with those outcasts who want legalisation of homosexuality in Ghana”.

South Africa to become first African country to legalise Cannabis

South Africa will soon become the first African country to legalise cannabis sativa, popularly known as marijuana for strictly medical purposes. In a letter sent to Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), who have been championing the legalisation of the Medical Innovation Bill, the Medicines Control Council (MCC) revealed that the proposed guidelines on cannabis production for medicinal use would soon publish.

‘I wish to confirm that our office is working on a number of guidance documents to be shared with the public relating to the manufacture of cannabis for medicinal purposes’.

The Medical Innovation Bill was first tabled by late MP Mario Oriani-Ambrosini who died of lung cancer in 2014, the same year he introduced the bill in Parliament seeking for the legalisation of cannabis for medicinal purposes, due to his health.

When the guidance documents are ready and approved, South Africa will be the very first African country to legalise the use of Cannabis for medical purposes in the country.

Man stoned to death after he was caught defiling dead body of his 11-year-old daughter

48-year-old man was stoned to death by his family members after he was found defiling the body of his daughter at his home in Kuresoi North, Kenya. According to Nairobi News, prior to the incident the man and his family members were making burial arrangements of the 11-year-old girl, who died of a heart condition. Confirming the incident, the area chief, Kuria Mburu said.

“His wife said she got suspicious when her husband kept sneaking into the room where his daughter’s body laid. She decided to follow him and found him in the act. She raised an alarm, alerting his five daughters and other relatives who beat him to death.”

One of the neighbours said she heard screams while working in her shamba about 500 metres away, but upon reaching the compound, the man’s lifeless body lay outside his house surrounded by the family. His body was later taken to Molo Sub county mortuary.
Deputy Commissioner Baraza Wafula, who also confirmed the incident said police had started investigations into the matter.

“This is a police case. The law does not encourage people to kill others in the name of justice.

The deceased wife who had travelled to Kericho town in preparation of a cleansing ceremony.
According to the Kalenjin customs, a ritual has to be done by elders of the clan to cleanse the body of the man and his immediate family from evil spirits before burial. The decision to conduct a burial ceremony is then left at the discretion of the family.

However, a source in the family who sought anonymity, revealed that the two would be buried on the same day but no burial ceremony will be done for the man.
“His body will be buried on Friday morning during the ritual, after which a memorial service and the normal funeral proceedings will be carried out for the girl.”

Floyd Mayweather's mansion in Las Vegas reportedly burglarized

Retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s Las Vegas mansion was burglarized over the weekend, while he partied in Los Angeles to celebrate his 40th birthday.
According to a statement issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, there was forced entry into his home on Wood Creek Court through a rear office door sometime between Friday and Monday.

Officer Danny Cordero of the LVMPD office of public information, said items of value were taken, but “we still don’t know what exactly was taken. We haven’t gotten a list from the victim of what items were taken.”
Cordero said it was still an active investigation, and detectives were trying to get with the victim to see what exactly was taken. The statement said suspects have not been identified at this time. The police also did not identify the address as Mayweather’s residence.
Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions and a longtime close friend of the former boxer, said he had no comment on the incident.
In 2008, Mayweather claimed that he was robbed of $7 million worth of jewelry during a burglary at his Las Vegas home.
