Whistleblowers Remanded In Prison For Giving False Information

Guys, before you blow whistle on any alleged looter, make sure that you are”SURE” before you go and land yourself in trouble.
EFCC on Tuesday, May 16, arraigned the duo of Buhari Fannami and Ba-Kura Abdullahi on two separate one-count charges before Justice M. T Salihu of the Federal High Court Maiduguri, for allegedly giving false information to the agency under the whistleblowing policy.

Fannamit had misled the EFCC with the information about illegally acquired monies purportedly buried at the residence of one Ba’a Lawan but the information turned out to be false after the execution of a search warrant.

The charges read:
“That you, Buhari Fannami on or about the 8th day of May, 2017 at Maiduguri, Borno State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did make statement to Officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission under the Whistle Blowing policy to the effect that large sums of money being the proceeds of crime were buried in the residence Ba’a Lawan at Pompomari Layout along Pompomari Bypass, Maiduguri which information/statement you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 39 (2) (a) and 39 (2) (b) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004 respectively”.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge. Counsel for the prosecution Alkassim Ja’afar asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the accused person in prison pending trial.

Justice Salihu adjourned the matter to June 7 and 8, 2017 for hearing and ordered the accused to be remanded in the prison custody.

On his part, Ba-Kura Abdullahi also gave false information to the effect that large sum of money in naira and foreign currencies were buried in the residence of Ba’a Lawan.

Justice Salihu adjourned his case to June 7 and 8, 2017, for a commencement of trial and ordered the accused to be remanded in custody.

Nigeria Got $29Billion From Shell JVs In Four Years

The royalties and corporate taxes paid by Shell to the Nigerian government last year increased to $1.4bn from $1.1bn in 2015 on the back of the rise in crude oil prices, while the Shell Petroleum Development Company-operated joint ventures alone contributed $29bn to the federation’s purse between 2012 and 2016.

The royalties and taxes would have been higher but for the resurgence of militant attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta that caused the nation’s production to plummet.

Shell-operated ventures in Nigeria recorded an output of 572,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2016, down from 688,000 boepd in 2015.

The Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria and Managing Director, SPDC, Mr. Osagie Okunbor, stated these at the presentation of the 2017 Shell Nigeria Briefing Notes.

Okunbor, who was represented by the Communications Manager, Shell Nigeria, Mrs. Sola Abulu, said, “Shell remains strongly committed to the development of Nigeria. Shell has been operating in Nigeria for more than 50 years.

“And it is not by chance that we have remained deeply committed to the development of Nigeria, her people and her economy by efficiently and responsibly producing oil and gas in onshore and offshore as well as distributing gas to industries and producing liquefied natural gas for export.”

Okunbor said the determination of Shell to support the monetisation of the nation’s huge gas resources led it to establish Shell Nigeria Gas in 1998, with current supply of gas to about 90 industrial customers in Ogun, Rivers and Abia states for power generation and processing by industries for the manufacture of domestic products.

He explained that the oil major paid special attention to the welfare of host communities, making Nigeria the second largest recipient of social investment spending in the Shell Group after the United States.

He said in a bid to involve more Nigerian contractors in its operations, the Shell Contractor Funding initiative was expanded with eight participating banks committing about $2.2bn to fund contract execution by indigenous companies working for Shell Companies in Nigeria.

Okunbor said since the programme’s creation in 2011, loans worth approximately $1bn have been awarded to 220 Small and Medium-Enterprises with no recorded defaults on repayment.

Osinbajo Will Not Be Allowed To Replace Buhari – Northern Elders

The Northern Elders Forum has maintained that the North must retain the presidency if Buhari’s failing health prevents him from seeking re-election in 2019.

While speaking in an exclusive interview with New Telegraph, the spokesman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi, disclosed that should President Muhammadu Buhari’s failing health prevents him from seeking re-election in 2019, the North must retain the presidency.

The elder statesman stressed that the region must be allowed to field a presidential candidate through the All Progressives Congress (APC), in 2019 should Buhari fail to seek re-election.

He said in the situation of any eventuality, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo should be allowed to complete the current tenure but will not be allowed to contest in 2019.

Abdullahi said, “The constitutional provision says that in the event that the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated for one reason or the other and cannot perform the duties of his office, he will be succeeded by the Vice president.

“But no one is in a position to know at what point he is going to recover fully and come back to office, or whether the unexpected could happen. The northern elders insist that Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019

“If the worst case scenario happens, and Buhari is not back on seat, the constitution is very clear that the vice president takes over.

“And what we then expect is that he will take that tenure to its logical end and from there, the politics of power sharing will take precedence over anything else.

“When the unexpected happens, in 2019 we will be back to our position that the north should be treated equitably and fairly. And we expect that another northern candidate will emerge as presidential candidate on the platform of APC.”

Abdullahi lamented that the north is still marginalized in spite of the fact that Buhari is president. “To be fair and truly honest, I will say that yes, our expectations have been far above what we saw on ground. Meaning that what we were expecting from this government in terms of equity and justice to the north has not materialized up till now,” he said.

According to him, the North is still being cheated in spite of the fact that one of its own is president.

“For example, if you look at both the 2016 and 2017 budgets, if you combine capital and recurrent expenditures for both years, the North took roughly 30 per cent in spite of the fact that everybody knows that even if it’s by one per cent, the north is more populated than the South. Even in terms of landmass, the North constitutes 75 per cent of the landmass of this country,” he pointed out.

The NEF spokesman blamed Buhari for giving key ministries in his administration to southerners.

– Politicians will always play politics.

SERIOUSLY? Governor Yari Builds Massive Hotel In Lagos With Funds Stolen

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos said they have found a hotel being constructed by Governor Yari of Zamfara state with $3m he stole from London-Paris Club loan refund to Nigerian states.

The governor who is the chairman of the Governor’s Forum illegally diverted N19billion reportedly meant for “consultants” from the Paris club loan refund which had been illegally paid into the account of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) by Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to SR, the hotel is a 100-room property situated in Lekki area of Lagos.

EFCC officials said they have already marked down the hotel as proceeds of corruption and plan to take it over after obtaining a court order.
Apart from the $3million, Governor Yari also diverted N500 million from the Paris Club refund to pay off a loan, an EFCC source revealed to SR.

According to the source, Governor Yari withdrew N500m from the N19 billion Paris Club refund from the account of Nigeria Governors Forum from the N522b allocated to the 36 states and deposited the sum into a mortgage bank account.

Yari then transferred the sum to the mortgage bank from which he had borrowed N800m to purchase to properties in 2013. According to the source, the governor was able to renegotiate his debt from N800m to N500m.

Overall the governor is said to have embezzled the sum of N2.2 billion from the N19billion set aside illegally to pay “consultants.”

SR had earlier revealed that Senate President Bukola Saraki and his cronies are also being investigated by the EFCC for his role in the embezzlement of N3.5b from the Paris Club loan through the slush fund placed at the Access Bank by the Nigeria Governors Forum, who claimed it was meant for consultants.

Lagos Police Armourer Secretly Sells Arms To Militants… attempts suicide after he was caught

A police sergeant attached to Ipakodo Police Division has been arrested after confessing to selling police arms and ammunition to suspected militants in Lagos.

It was gathered that the suspect, identified as Sergeant Sunday Odu, attempted to shoot himself dead at the station, but was prevented by a team inspecting the armoury.

A source told Punch that the sergeant had been detained and put in a cell at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, where the case was being investigated.

The source said that the incident happened on Thursday, saying Odu indicted another policeman, whom he claimed connived with him in selling the arms.

“A police audit team, led by an assistant commissioner of police, went to the station on Thursday. It was a verification exercise to know the situation of arms and ammunition at the station.

“They attempted to bribe the team, but they insisted on doing their job and going on with the inspection of the armoury.

“During the audit, they discovered that they had sold many of the arms and ammunition. To be precise, about 162 arms had been sold.

Immediately the situation was discovered, the armourer, a police sergeant, cocked his gun and wanted to kill himself.

“But the team quickly seized the gun from him and handcuffed him. He has been taken to the SCIID. After much interrogation and beating, he confessed that he sold the arms and another policeman was involved,” said the source.

Also, a source at the SCIID confirmed that the policeman was in custody, adding that the number of ammunition sold was large.

He said, “I don’t know if he sold arms. But I am aware that he sold bullets to militants. The bullets he sold cannot be exhausted by a police division for one year. I was told the Divisional Police Officer, who checked the armoury, discovered that where they kept bullets were filled with stones. The bullets had developed wings. The DPO reported his findings to the state commissioner of police, who then ordered that he be detained and transferred to the SCIID. He is in the cell now.”

It was gathered from a detective that the suspect confessed that he sold the bullets to militants, and that the police command was already looking into the case.

He said the command was bothered about how militants were getting arms and ammunition and the spate of killings in the Ikorodu area.

“It will not be right to continue to protect these bad cops that are spoiling the name of the police force and I do hope that, with this discovery, others doing such terrible things would stop,” another source said.
